Revibe: Black Sail Reunion

Street art has thrust a permanent impression on the modern world. During a time of such economic uncertainty, it offers an elixir of fervor, ingenuity, and rebellion. In Columbus, street art has manifested itself in many ways. One of them is Black Sail, an artist collective formed by a group of CCAD students in 2009 whose imagery is as complex as it is vivid. Its members recently reunited to present Revibe, a one-week-only art show at gallery831 in the Brewery District. Revibe artists include Travis Czekalski, John Hastings, Adam Henderson, John Malta, Mike Marine, Grace Passerotti, James Quarles, Bijan Sharifi, Jon Stommel, and Aaron Troyer.

“The purpose of the group was to combine our talents and imaginations to paint murals, stage art shows, and collaborate on projects that would hopefully yield a result that would be stronger than what any of us could do on our own,” said Stommel, a founding Black Sail artist. “A few of us are about to move out west, and we thought this would be the perfect opportunity to reunite for a show one more time.”

The one-week-only exhibit ends tonight, but gallery831 curator Juan Carrera plans to invite Black Sail back for an annual show.
